SARI TM KIVINEN is a Sydney-based artist working with performance, video, photography and installation with a thematic interest inexploring the function of role-play in social and domestic settings.

The core characters of her role system are viewed by Kivinen as exact aspects of her psyche in constant conflict. Thus they are narratively constructed as siblings that never cease to be in conflict. For several years, Kivinen believed that she had effectively passed the buck to her characters, objectively shared her own neuroses and self-destructive tendencies amongst performative roles that act out any undesirable behaviour.

More recently, Kivinen has made the realisation that she cannot escape the system she has created for her roles; she is affected by them as much as they are of her.

Kivinen is currently on the Raumars Artist in Residence Programme, Finland, in 2009.
